Queen Victoria School Support Installation of New Governor at Edinburgh Castle

On 1 May 2025, five Queen Victoria School pupils proudly represented the school at the formal installation of Major General Bob Bruce CBE DSO as His Majesty’s Governor of Edinburgh Castle. Held on the historic Castle Esplanade, the ceremony was steeped in tradition and pageantry, marking a significant moment in Scotland’s military heritage.

Major General Bruce, an alumnus of Queen Victoria School and a current school commissioner, brings a distinguished military career to his new role. Having commissioned into The Royal Scots in 1987, he has served in various capacities, including operations in Northern Ireland, the Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan. His leadership earned him the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), and he has held prominent positions within the Ministry of Defence and Army Headquarters, as well as a tenure at the Pentagon.

The installation ceremony was conducted by the Lord Lyon King of Arms on behalf of His Majesty The King. A guard of honour, comprising soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Scotland’s Balaklava Company (5 SCOTS) and the Grenadier Guards, lined the castle gates. The Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland provided musical accompaniment, enhancing the ceremonial atmosphere.

Major General Bruce expressed his deep honour in assuming the role, stating, “To occupy this post is to embrace a tremendous legacy and responsibility. The castle is a symbol of the connection between the Army and our country. To serve as Governor is to serve that story.” Forces News
