On Monday 6th July 2026, three pupils from Defence Children Services schools in Cyprus travelled to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London to take part in the prestigious Poetry by Heart Grand Finale, where they celebrated both individual and collective success on the national stage.
Poetry By Heart is one of the UK’s leading poetry speaking competitions, this year 146, 677 pupils engaged with Poetry By Heart and many thousands more will have done so in the schools that chose to make it an in-school activity only. We are incredibly proud that Holly, a Year 5 pupil from Episkopi Primary School, reached the National Finals of the Freestyle Competition, finishing among the final 10 pupils from across the country and performing at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in front of an audience of more than 800 people. This remarkable achievement reflects her talent, confidence and dedication.
The celebrations did not stop there.
DCS Schools Cyprus was also honoured with a Special Award, becoming one of only three school groups nationally to receive this prestigious recognition. The award recognised how DCS schools in Cyprus embraced Poetry by Heart, adapting the programme with creativity and innovation to ensure every child had the opportunity to develop their voice through poetry.
Finley and Archer, from Episkopi Primary School proudly represented DCS as they accepted the award on behalf of all our schools. Their confidence during their inspiring acceptance speech captured the spirit of our community and demonstrated the oracy skills that Poetry by Heart helps to nurture.
While we celebrate these remarkable achievements, we are equally proud of every child across DCS schools in Cyprus who took part in this year’s competition. Their enthusiasm, courage and commitment to learning and performing poetry have made this a truly memorable year.
Congratulations to Holly, Finley, Archer, and every pupil, member of staff and family who helped make this national success possible. Together, we continue to prove that every child has a voice worth hearing.
