The Month of the Military Child: April 2025

Like the dandelion, Service children can thrive wherever they land.

What is the Month of the Military Child?

The Month of the Military Child an annual event held in April, which gives us an opportunity to celebrate Service children and the vital part they play within the Armed Forces community.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • ‘Purple Up’ day is officially on Friday 25th April 2025, but you can celebrate on any day that works for you! You could host a non-uniform day, asking pupils to wear something purple to represent the colour of the #MotMC.
  • Host a breakfast event: Include parents associated with the Armed Forces. Don’t forget to invite staff who were once Service children too!
  • The charity Never Such Innocence: Every year, Never such Innocence run an art/poetry competition throughout April.
  • Highlight April as the ‘Month of the Military Child’ on your website and newsletters. You could use this opportunity to share the support you offer to Service children, particularly to those new to the area.
  • Host a ‘person in uniform day’: Invite a serving parent to come to the school to read to children, or talk about their role/experiences in the services.
  • ‘Share your story’ project: Get children to think about their life experiences from being a Service child and how they could share this with the class. Children could create artwork or a journal about their experiences.
  • Create a time zone wall: Put up a series of clocks on the wall to identify different time zones from around the world, with a focus on where Service children have lived before. This is a great conversation starter!
  • World map exercise: Mark the locations your Service children have lived on a map to build this in to future lessons.

Don’t forget to share photos from your events using the hashtags #MotMC or #monthofthemilitarychild
