Healthy School Status at Akrotiri School

The healthy school’s agenda sits at the heart of the Akrotiri ethos and culture. A deep understanding of the impact that healthy bodies and minds have on academic and professional development permeates the curriculum and influences our pedagogy and whole school development.

In April, we were delighted to have confirmed that the evidence submitted to the assessment panel met all the current criteria for the Bronze Healthy Schools level.

The Wiltshire Council programme is provided to support schools effectively address the health and wellbeing of children and young people.

Using the whole school approach and teaching Personal, Social, Health and Economic education, schools can build on previous developments to actively promote learning and healthy lifestyle choices. Support provided aims to build the capacity of schools to deliver effective and sustainable interventions for all children.

Healthy Schools, Wiltshire

Feedback from Wiltshire Council suggested that we weren’t the first overseas school to start the process with Wiltshire Council, but we are the first to succeed! They commented that it was extremely encouraging to hear about the focus on health and wellbeing at Akrotiri School. Further comments that members of the group made about the Akrotiri application stated:

  • Well written application with excellent examples of school provision
  • Varied opportunities to engage parents
  • Good examples of pupil voice
  • Strong focus on RSE, within PSHE
  • Promotion of oral health is clear, with support from local dentist
  • There are an interesting range of opportunities for children to take part in physical activity, including clubs
  • Excellent active travel to school
  • The work of the (Learning Mentor) ELSA sounds very useful
  • Rewards and celebrations tie in well with the promotion of emotional health

This gives the school a tremendous platform from which to build and work towards the Silver Healthy Schools level, which we all look forward to over the course of the next academic year.
