Sixth form students from King Richard School and St John’s School, recently embarked on an exciting and invaluable visit to Manchester. The trip was designed to support students in preparing for their next steps after school, equipping them with a greater sense of independence and a deeper understanding of university life and expectations.

The visit provided students with an immersive experience, combining academic exploration with opportunities to develop life skills essential for their transition into higher education. Over several days, the students engaged in activities that helped them refine their university choices, gain insight into different courses, and experience life in a major UK city.
One of the key highlights of the trip was a series of university visits. The students toured Liverpool John Moore University, Liverpool and Coventry University, where they attended presentations on courses, admissions processes, and student life. These visits allowed them to explore a range of academic disciplines, ask questions about their future studies, and get a feel for the facilities and learning environments at each institution. The informative sessions helped students clarify their academic ambitions and set realistic expectations for university life. A visit to the UCAS fayre, where they were given first hand opportunity to speak to a range of universities to support them honing in on their chosen course.
A particularly exciting aspect of the trip was an independent day, during which students were responsible for arranging their own visits to universities they were personally considering. This activity encouraged them to step out of their comfort zones, plan their journeys, and navigate different parts of the UK independently. Many students visited prestigious institutions such as the University of Manchester, the University of Birmingham, and the University of Liverpool. This element of the trip fostered self-reliance and decision-making skills—qualities that will serve them well in their future studies.
Beyond the academic focus, the trip also provided a valuable social and cultural experience. Students had the chance to explore Manchester, gaining first-hand experience of city life in the UK. They spent leisure time together, strengthening friendships and building new connections with their peers from the other school. This interaction encouraged collaboration and teamwork, reinforcing the importance of networking and mutual support as they prepare to embark on their university journeys.
Throughout the trip, students demonstrated confidence, equity, curiosity, integrity, commitment and respect. They took full advantage of the opportunities presented to them, asking insightful questions, engaging with university representatives, and embracing the independence that the experience demanded.
For many, this visit was a turning point in their decision-making process. It helped solidify their university choices, increased their confidence in managing life away from home, and provided them with practical experience in navigating new environments. The experience also reassured both students and parents that they are capable of taking on the challenges of higher education with confidence and resilience.
The joint visit was a resounding success, and the collaboration between King Richard School and St John’s School provided a supportive and enriching environment for students to learn and grow. As they move forward in their education, the lessons learned and experiences gained from this trip will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their transition to university life.
